Chile gives free ninety-day entry to most of the countries. But, of course, India doesn’t get free access, and we have to apply for a Chile visa. I was once stuck on the Chile-Bolivia border because I didn’t have any tourist visa for Chile as I had thought that India was also in the list of those fortunate countries. How wrong I was!
Having paid more than what I should have for this mistake, I decided I would be more sincere while doing visa research and would also help other travelers by updating them with my knowledge on the world visas.
[Update 2019] : Since April 1 2019, Chile allows all Indians holding a valid US visa into Chile. So if you have a valid US visa, you don’t have to apply for a tourist visa.

The Consular Section of the Embassy of Chile in India states that henceforth all Indian travelers holding B1/B2 Visa or Residence Permit (Green Card) from the USA, with current validity of six months, do not require a Chilean tourist visa (either Simple Tourism or Multiple Tourism or Multiple-Business). This came into effect from the 1st April 2019.
This is the new information that Chile provides-
The Consular Section of the Embassy of Chile in India states that henceforth all Indian travelers holding a valid US Visa, with current validity of six months, do not require a Chilean tourist visa (either Simple Tourism or Multiple Tourism or Multiple-Business). This came into effect from the 1st April 2019.
NOTE
– All travelers to Chile need to have a valid passport for at least six months from the date of entrance into the country.
– Tourist travelers should have enough financial support for their stay in Chile.
– The period of stay in Chile for tourists is up to 90 days.
– Not applicable to USA Transit Visa (Visa C).

Now as I read this message I understand that all the travelers having a valid US visa can travel to Chile without applying for a separate Chilean tourist visa. The only exemption seems to be where the Indian travelers have a USA transit visa. But if you are in doubt, please email the Chilean Consulate in New Delhi @nuevadelhi@consulado.gob.cl and confirm.
If you do not have a valid US visa, please keep reading for the Chile visa application process.
I applied for two different Chile visas: one was a temporary residentship which I applied for as I was going for a four-month-long volunteer program in Chile, and the other visa for Chile was the tourist one for which I applied from La Paz, Bolivia.
I am penning down the process of getting the tourist Chile visa for Indians from Bolivia. Then I also write down the application process for the tourist Chile visa from India (based on my research, asking around, and filling a dummy application.)
Chile Tourist Visa – Application Process from Bolivia
My case was different than a regular tourist, as I already held an expired temporary residentship visa for Chile, my flight was due in two weeks from Santiago, and I applied for this Chile visa from Bolivia.
But if you plan to apply for a visa for Chile from Bolivia, I can assure you that the process won’t be simple. The Consulate of Chile in Bolivia was pretty strict about issuing visas to Indians. The lady who seemed to be the head of the consulate office told me that I should have applied for a Chile visa from India, my home country.
When I recited my story and said that all the countries issue visas when someone applies from a third country, which is neither the traveler’s home country nor the destination country, the officer said that Chile didn’t care about what other countries did, and Chile doesn’t give visas to Indians if they apply from outside India. She also said that the Chile consulate in La Paz could only issue visas to Bolivians.
I requested vehemently, and she said she would make an exception for me, but she would require a minimum of two weeks for the approval of my Chile visa, as Santiago Ministry of External Affairs will have to send their consent.
I sighed and submitted my passport.
I also submitted the following documents along with the visa application form,
- Original Passport
- A copy of my flight ticket from Chile to India
- A copy of my previous expired temporary resident visa for Chile(As a part of the program I had received temporary residentship visa)
- A copy of my RUT or the residentship card
Having had a few experiences with the Indian passport and world visas, I resorted to my backup plan and emailed all the people I knew in Chile and the Indian embassy in Bolivia. Bolivia doesn’t have an Indian embassy, and the email bounced, so I tried meeting the Indian consul in La Paz. But when I knocked on the door of the address which was mentioned as the Consulate on Google, the consul’s wife told me that the consul didn’t sit in La Paz but some other city. I called at the number she provided, and the consul said he couldn’t help me much and that I should contact the Indian ambassador in Peru.
When I told my story to the Indian ambassador in Peru, he emailed the Indian embassy in Santiago, who then requested the Ministry of external affairs in Santiago to approve my visa for Chile on an urgent basis.
The approval came on the same day.
The next day, I rushed to the Chile Consulate, paid fifty dollars to the bank as the lady told me to, received my passport with a Chile visa which was valid only until the date of my flight, walked out of the building, and thanked the universe for taking me out of that one.
But I ended up spending a lot of money and time and energy in the process.
Please don’t take the chances of applying for a visa from Bolivia.

I guess it depends on the country you apply from.

Chilean Visa for Indians – Application Process from India
If you apply for a tourist visa for Chile from India, you have to fill the online form on the Tramites website, upload a photo and the required documents, and then you would have to wait to visit the New Delhi consulate of Chile, the only one in India, for an interview, to pay, and to collect the passport.
I didn’t apply for a tourist visa for Chile from India, but I talked to many friends and read a lot of blogs to be able to summarize the information here correctly. I also filled the visa application form until the last step to understand the process.

Here are the steps of the application process along with the screenshots.
Step 1. of Chile visa for Indians
Fill in your personal details and the details of the trip in the application form.
Note: Multipurpose Tourist visa means multiple entries and exits.
Step 2. of Chile visa for Indians
Fill in the applicant’s identification details.
Step 3. of Chile visa for Indians
Add your contact details and information about your family.
Step 4. of Chile visa for Indians
In the General Description section of the form, provide your profession, education, and other details.
This step of the form also requires you to fill the details of an acquaintance or relative in Chile. You can put your hotel’s address and name in the acquaintance description.
Here is the screenshot of how I would have filled the hotel details. Home Phone is the contact number of the hotel.
Step 5. of Chile visa for Indians
Write about your intended activity in Chile.
The activity in Chile is the reason why you are visiting Chile. I selected the Tourims (means tourism) activity and filled in the details of the hotel again in the rest of the fields.
This screen will take you to the document upload screen.
Step 6. of Chile visa for Indians
Attach documents relevant to the Chile visa requirements for Indian citizens.
The documents required are a photo, passport copy, return flight tickets, hotel reservations, cover letter, and bank statements.
Now here is a catch. The website asks for an Apostille check which is a background check from the police department. When I took a temporary residentship Chile visa, I applied for one from the Indian passport office, went to the Bangalore passport center, and got the background check stamped on my passport. The whole process took a week.
But when it comes to a tourist visa for Chile, both single entry and multiple entries, though the Chile Consulate mentions that they need a background check, they don’t ask for one or expect one. I read this on multiple blogs, and many of my friends who recently got a Chile visa confirmed that they didn’t submit a background check.
One of my friends submitted her cover letter in place of a background check.
Also, the Consulate website mentions a visa interview but from what I have read online, they are never keen on interviewing any applicant, and if you submit your previous visas or current visas to other countries, the Consul would waiver the interview. (Another fellow traveler Manisha has written well about the Chile visa process here, and she also didn’t give an interview.)
After you have applied for the visa for Chile by filling the online form, attaching a photo, and the relevant documents, the status of the application would become payable. This status change might happen the next day or might take a few days.
You can also send an email @nuevadelhi@consulado.gob.cl and hope for an answer. Here is the link to the Indian embassy in Santiago if you have been looking for their link.
After it has become payable, as the Chile consulate in India doesn’t accept online payments as of now, you would have to go to the Chilean Consulate in New Delhi, pay for the visa, get your passport stamped if the visa is approved, and voila.
From what I have read online, the process might take from a few days to about eight working days or two weeks.
I hope that the Chile visa process is clear to you now. Similar to all the visa applications, Chilean visa application also seems like a hassle, but I promise you that the stunning Chilean landscapes and the warm people are worth more than the effort.

1. Delhi Notary
2. SDM ( Sub Divisional Magistrate ) Stamp
3. MEA ( Ministry of External Affairs ) Stamp
4. Apostille Strikes
Process Charges:- 3000/- Per document

Thanks for the great post. I have been offered a Research Assistant position in Santiago, Chile. I was suggested from the institute to join there in November 2020 (however, they appeared to be flexible with the dates). Also, they asked me to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa. I wrote to the Chile Embassy in New Delhi a few days back. They told me that the visa application process has started in India. So, now I have started arranging the documents to be submitted and I have some queries regarding that.
1. I will be travelling with my mother. So, which route will be the best for us? via Dubai or via London?
2. Can I get my documents apostilled by hiring a lawyer outside any court?
3. Due to the pandemic, I am very confused about booking flight tickets. Since it will be a long journey and every now and then I hear that flights get cancelled I am a bit apprehensive about my travel. When do you suggest that I should plan my travel? Actually I desperately need inputs from other experienced travellers to arrive at a decision.

1. How long is the flight via London? From Dubai 3 connecting flights with a 35 hour total travel almost. Depends on the time between flights. Choose as per comfort. Emirates was very comfortable. Don’t pick Ethiopian airlines that are abundant on this route. Take travel insurance that you can opt for while booking tickets. Or book refundable or flexible tickets. You may have to pay a bit extra but you would save a lot if something gets rescheduled.

I’m planning to visit 7 countries in South America.
I stay in Bangalore and mostly all embassies are in Delhi. I’ve checked with Peru Embassy they’ve told me that I have to come personally and submit my passport for tourist visa.
Now my question is: Is there any way I can apply for multiple countries in South America similar to Schengen visa in Europe.
As I don’t want to go 7 times to Delhi and Submit my passport individually to each embassy.
Hey Bhanu. Some of the countries now give visa on arrival or visa-free entry to Indians who have a valid US visa. Some South American countries also do give visa on arrival irrespective of that. If you want to make the visa process a bit easier, I think you can either get a US visa or check for the countries whose entry rules allow e visa or visa on arrival. Also, you can get some of the visas from South America itself. Like I got the Bolivia visa from the Bolivia embassy in Cusco. This can be done if you have some time on hand while traveling. I also got a Peru visa from Santiago.

I just came across your post and thought maybe you can help me with my questions. I am applying for student Visa. What are the apostille documents that has to be submitted in my case (just Police Clearance and the acceptance letter) If not what and has to be attached? And there is a row that says to attach documents. So, in which all the other related documents should be included? Like medical certificate and the degree certificate those kinda stuffs. Also, my other major doubt is,the university printed my acceptance letter without my surname. Will that be alright?

Hi Anitha. Thanks for writing to me. I am not sure about the apostille documents for a student visa. I think you should have a surname on your acceptance letter. You should email them and ask to send you a new one to avoid any issues later on. In Chile everyone has two surnames and two first names. They might have messed up your name in confusion. Can you call the consulate? Might be faster. Ask your university to help you with visa matters. Universities and consulates generally work closely to process visas faster. Hope this helps. Thanks for your comment. I am glad that you write this here for Chile recently removed that page I had linked to and pasted the information from. There they had written specifically about the need for a B1/B2 visa. But now they say only the USA transit visas are not accepted for this exemption. I think you would be good with an H1 visa. Please email the embassy at the link I have provided and confirm if still in doubt.

Hey James, thanks for your comment. What sort of visa are you applying for? Antecedentes means background. As far as I have understood they expect you to provide further information. Specifically a background check or an apostille check which Chile doesn’t ask for a regular tourist visa from what I have heard over years. Email the embassy and ask them what they require. let me know what they say. If you hit reply to this comment and you don’t get a text box, just head to the bottom of the page and enter a new comment. Thank you for response, yes we gave the interview and interview date was 26/8/2019. And on my husband application closed status was updating 8/8/2019( reason is non payment) .In my application status was updating on 9/9/2019. We apply for Visa 1/8/2019 and interview date was 26/8/2019. We have tried calling them but number is not responding.
Oh no. Both of your applications closed without any intimation? You didn’t pay? Maybe that is why. I don’t know what can be done. If the interview has been done, the process can be continued from the interview maybe. I am sorry but I think apart from emailing them and calling them I don’t think of any other solution. If you are planning to visit Delhi, maybe you can drop by? Look for embassy email ids and keep trying to contact them. Check your emails if you receive any message from them regarding nonpayment and the next actins.
Hello, Me and my husband had applied tourist visa for Chile and my interview date was 26/8/2019 .I checked my online visa status that was change on 9/9 2019 and showing closed. But in my husband online status it’s showing close 8sept even before the interview date . Is this normal What is the meaning of this. Is it rejected ? Oops. Sorry to hear this Mangita. Why don’t you try calling the embassy? It shouldn’t close even before interview date. The only reason they might have closed it because they don’t need an interview. You didn’t get a reply on that email? That is weird. I would suggest try looking for phone numbers and call. Also, did you interview happened or not? The dates here are a bit confusing.

Hi, I have applied for VISA Subject to Contract, Work Contract has been provided by my organization. I have submitted the application with all necessary Apostille and Cover letter with contract details. My current status shows “En Espera” Is this means it’s under process and I have to wait for it’s processing..How much time does it usually takes please.

Very good information on the blog which I was looking for to get Chile tourist visa. I am a frequent traveler for attending meeting and conferences. For Indian passport holders, it is traumatic to get a visa for each country, we are exempted from visas like European, US or Canada. In the last three months, I had to travel to S. Korea, China, Germany and every time apply for the visa for each country, takes minimum 10 – 15 days. Now I have to travel to Brazil and Chile, I have obtained Brazil visa, applied for the Chile visa online today, online application is successful. Now what i understand that I have to wait for update/intimation from Chile Embassy that my visa is approved and then only i have to visit the Chile Embassy in New Delhi for getting stamped the visa on my passport. Have I interpreted correctly?
How many days its takes for approval of tourist single entry visa after submission of online application successfuly.

It takes a few days to get the application status updated. But you can also check with the embassy by emailing them if you think it is taking too much time. I am currently in Santiago and I will be working here for around 8 months. I am trying to bring my spouse and daughter as my dependants.
I entered Chile with a business visa and now working on PETT (temporary work permit). My Temporary Residence Visa application has been lodged on 8th July 2019. But the information I received is that it will take around 6 months to processing. So applying for depended visa after that will not be really practical. So below is the advise I got from the immigration team of our company.
“My dependants must apply for visitor visas – not temporary residence visas – at the Chilean Consulate. Thus, proof of the main applicant’s temporary residence visa or Chilean work contract are not typically required for visitor visa applications. Once the dependants travel to Chile, their temporary residence visa applications in country can be submitted.”
But in sites I find that work permit is required for inviting them. Kindly provide your thoughts on this please.

Hey George. Thanks for writing to me. I think you should just ask them to apply for visitor permits without showing any work contract or anything. Getting Chile travel visa is easy. Once they are in the country, you can submit their temporary residence application after showing your temporary residentship application and work contract. Make sure you ask them to apply for visitor visas which are valid for at least a month. You can provide the itinerary and their reservations etc as per for a month. Or you can also email the Chilean embassy and ask them how you should go ahead. Maybe you can also apply for their temporary residentship with your application? Please ask. For (now when I think) this doesn’t sound right that you call them on a visitor visa and then apply for residentship. Visit the Indian embassy in Santiago or call them. So my question was, I will be crossing border through land while travelling from El Calafate to Puerto Natales. So is the immigration with US visa possible at Land border in Chile?
Hey Yash. Thanks for writing. I think you can do the immigration at the land border with the US visa marked on your passport. Do read the exact embassy declaration as I have linked in my blog. Also, you can write to the embassy at the email I have mentioned and ask them and keep the print out of the email with you, just in case.

Now I want to visit to Chile as a tourist for 7 days. when I’m trying to fill the online application form, they asking for apostille documents. I can’t get it, it’s long time process to get it done. So what can I do now, is it mandatory to do it or can apply without it. If can apply without apostille, then how can do? let me know please.

Thanks for writing. You can apply to Chile tourist visa without apostille, and you can read the comments here in which apostille is discussed in detail. In place of apostille, you can attach some other document, like identification.

Hi. Priyanka. I am Angat and ve been travelling to achule evry year to visit my family. I am flying out soon again to Santiago Chile and have got both information and confirmation from the embassy of Chile New Delhi on my email saying Indian travellers holding valid B1/2 USA visa do not require tourist visa anymore. But I am quite afraid of the ground staff at the New Delhi airport or the immigration would have any knowledge about this and wouldn’t make an issue for me to board the flight. Please share your thoughts on this . Thank you
Hey Angat. Don’t worry. I think just carry a print out of the email from the Chilean embassy and show it to the ground staff in Delhi when you fly. Hope this works. Let me know how it goes. Good luck.

Hey Suman, sorry for the late reply. You can definitely get a Chilean visa. Chile is not a difficult country to get in. If your US visa is still valid, you can even enter on the basis of that. Please contact Chilean embassy for more information.

Hi Priyank, thanks a lot for this. This is super helpful. But please note that it is only for B1/B2 and not for H1B visa holders, so it is free for valid US visa but it has to be either B1 or B2. Can you please update it.

Though I had written down the entire message from the US embassy which clearly specifies that the exemption is only for the citizens who have B1/B2 visa, I have also updated my note and included the visa specification. Very informative – thanks. I have read on two news outlets that as of April 1st, 2019, Indians holding a US visa (B1/B2), with at least 6 months validity left, no longer require a Chilean visa to enter the country. I have emailed the Chilean Embassy in Delhi to confirm this in writing.

I have the same doubt. I have to join a conference in US this July and then moving to chile for a year. I visited the website and they mentioned, the Chile visa exemption over US visa w.e.f April 2019 but I’m still doubtful whether should I follow this protocol or should I apply for chile visa as well.

But the Chile website says that the maximum period to stay in Chile would be 90 days. Why don’t you email the embassy and ask them? They generally reply. Let us know what happens. Good luck.

This happened with me too for the first time.
I presume some goof up with the application can be a cause of Cerrado status. So am coming from the view point wherein, I did not upload all the necessary documents. They do send an email if its been closed by them, do check your mailbox as the embassy is very active over emails correspondence (possibly the only way to sort your queries out). Email id shared by Priyanka is correct, go ahead and shoot an email.
Note: Be sure that you are uploading all the documents as informed on the immigration site. Here are the documents name (to upload while applying) for your perusal
– Health certificate
– Invitation letter
– Work contract
– Degree certificate (has to be apostilled)
– PCC (has to be apostilled)
– Cover letter

Before 26th Jan’19, I couldn’t find even a single blog (which covers almost all the dimesnsion) till 10th page of Google search related to Chile-India thing. Thanks for putting it across!

[*] How long does it take from appointment date to get a Visa in hand? So say if one gets an appointment date on 10 March what do you think can be the quickest date of departure from India? How did it go with you-experience will surely help!

The idea behind writing detailed posts is that other travelers, especially who have similar constraints as Indians do, can use the information that I have collected. As I have written in the article above, the website asks for an Apostille check which is a background check from the police department. But from what I read and other bloggers and travelers confirmed, in place of the apostille check, you can upload another document. One of my friends submitted her cover letter in place of a background check. But this is what I have heard from Indians. Why don’t you try it as well? Chile expected an apostille check when I applied for a temporary residentship. But for travel visas, they didn’t care much. But I am not sure how are the rules for Azerbaijan.
When you are attaching documents, combine them into one file and upload that file. If you have all the pdfs, use an online pdf merge service. You will get one merged document. Then upload that document.

Okay. I didn’t face this. Your application is saved, right? Log into another browser and try submitting the application again. Sometimes some websites prefer a Firefox over Chrome or the other way around. Let me know if it works.
